In Mrs. Chesterton's class, kindergarten students learned all about Ruby Bridges, a civil rights activist who was the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana. Kindergarten students discussed what it means to be brave like Ruby and made connections to a time in their lives when they felt brave, too, through a schoolhouse craftivity!

As a collaborative activity between Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Chesterton, kindergarten students completed a STEM challenge using candy hearts. They had to make a prediction about how many candy hearts they thought they could stack before the tower fell. They then tested their predictions and stacked until their pastel towers collapsed!
First grade teacher, Miss Fischer, sweetened up her students' Valentine's Day by having them practice their estimation skills with conversation hearts. The candy served as a fun and seasonal manipulative in the math lesson!
In Miss Cutrone's math class, fourth graders counted and sorted conversation hearts to create fractions. After adding up their total amount of candy, students wrote fractions for the different amounts of each color, like white, green, purple, pink, and yellow! Students also identified the numerators and denominators before adding and subtracting the different fractions.

On the 100th day of school, 5th grade students in Miss Mehring's STEM class worked in teams to create a sustainable standing tower using marshmallows and spaghetti. Students were only allowed to use 100 pieces total, so they had to select their mini marshmallows and pasta strands carefully! Through trial-and-error and teamwork, the fifth graders brainstormed how to create a strong foundation and how to work their way up without the tower collapsing.
HNOM's elementary teachers (Kindergarten to Grade 5) bought coordinating T-shirts in a variety of colors to make the 100th Day of School extra special! Our principal, Ms. Ciminelli, wore a100th Day T-shirt with a mathematical spin!
In Mrs. Chesterton's kindergarten class, students counted up 100 stickers, pom poms, and plastic critters to design a T-shirt with the craft items! On one shirt, 100 heart stickers were splattered. On another, 100 plastic bugs crawled along! Students also arranged pom poms into many themes and patterns. For example, pom poms were a rocky terrain for a truck, the winding body of Eric Carle's "Very Hungry Caterpillar" and Carl Fredrickson's balloons in the movie, UP! Excellent counting and creativity, kindergarten!
In Miss Cutrone's math class on the 100th day of school, 4th grade had to budget with $100. Given a fake $100 bill and a spreadsheet, students challenged themselves to buy things for the classroom without going over budget. This real-world mathematics lesson also developed students' financial literacy!
